December 19, 2009 - Change of Direction
|
Well, anyone who has visited the Downloads page in the past will notice a very big difference next time. The links for downloading the applications are gone. I made this decision for a few reasons. First, the list of applications I have listed on this site has grown quite large. As such, it has become likely that there were outdated versions being hosted here. I did not want to have people downloading outdated versions of an application, especially if it was a security-related program. Second, the home page of each application can offer much mor einformation than what I offer here, allowing anyone who is interested in reading further about the application to do so. It also allows them, in many cases, to see what is new in the newest release of an application. Third, it is likely (although it is not always going to be the case) that the download servers for a particular application would allow for a faster download than mine will. Therefore, people can download files, especially the big files, more quickly. Fourth, this allows me to focus on adding new software, and less on trying to make sure that all of the current listings are up-to-date. This ensures that I can offer the best selection of programs, while also making sure that nothing offered here is out of date. Finally, while my host has not said anything to me about this, their terms of service do not look kindly on having download libraries hosted on their servers. While I have absolutely 0 complaints about my host, and while they have not yet approached me about this, I suspected that they might, if my traffic were to increase, and bandwidth usage go up. Therefore, because I do respect my host's terms, and enjoy the service they have given me over the past year, I want to honor that term by removing the files. The decision also comes as I prepare to start graduate school at the Heinz College at Carnegie Mellon University. this January. With less time to spend on updates, I felt that time would be better used to add new content, rather than trying to keep existing content up-to-date.
Now, since I would absolutely never allow this site to take a step backwards, I felt that I would give a small Christmas gift of my own this holiday season. Therefore, I am giving away 10 MasterJoe.ORG t-shirts, for FREE. Just click the Store link to the left, and use the promo code freexmas at checkout. Until my next update, I wish everyone a Merry Christmas, or the best of any other holiday you may celebrate this time of year, and a Happy New Year.
